Overview

Dolpo is the largest district in Nepal, covering about 5.36% of the country’s total land mass. Bordered by Tibet to the north, the district is surrounded by other Nepalese regions, with much of it protected by the Shey Phoksundo National Park. Dolpo’s elevation ranges from 5,003 to 25,016 ft above sea level, making it one of the world’s highest inhabited regions.
Shey Phoksundo National Park, within Dolpo, encompasses Nepal’s deepest lake, Phoksundo Lake, and protects endangered species like the snow leopard, musk deer, and Tibetan wolf. Despite being part of Nepal, Dolpo is significantly influenced by Tibet, both culturally and economically. When visiting Dolpo, one encounters scattered fortress-like villages and monasteries set amidst mountains of stark, ascetic beauty. The region’s isolation results from heavy snow covering its southernmost parts for most of the year, making it a challenging yet fascinating area to explore.
Dolpo remained closed to foreigners until 1989, with limited exploration by anthropologists and geographers. Renowned writers such as Peter Matthiessen and David Snellgrove, captivated by Dolpo’s sights, contributed to its mystique through works like “The Snow Leopard” and “Himalayan Pilgrimage.” While Shey Gompa, north of Phoksumdo Lake, attracts most trekkers, this Dolpo trek ventures even further into this mysterious land. Dolpo is a stronghold of Bon-po, a shamanistic religion predating Tibetan Buddhism, with symbolism contrasting Buddhist practices. The trek unveils ancient mud curtains inscribed with swastikas, opposite to the Buddhist chant of “om mani padme hum,” reflecting the Bon-po chant “om me try mu ye SA le duo,” meaning “in clarity unite” in Tibetan.
